How Scottish Football Tackled The English In The Past

The Scottish football pre season is now well under way and most players will be happy to see friendly matches taking the place of double training sessions on beaches or parks. For the larger clubs this means tours to Europe or beyond but for the majority it equates to more prosaic work outs against lower league opposition from Scotland, England or Ireland.

While encounters such as Falkirk v Leeds Utd may not exactly whip up excitement levels this summer it’s fair to say that cross border competitions haven’t always been so humdrum. Although a recent British cup idea mooted by the SPL seems extremely unlikely, Britain and Scotland in particular, used to have a huge appetite for such tournaments.
